Home of Robert Bakewell

July 30, 2007

The name of Robert Bakewell is known all over the world. Yet, strangely, many Loughborough area folk do not know what he was famous for. He was, of course, a sheep and cattle breeder - a man with a genius for laying down the law on how to produce lots of healthy livestock. Some historians have claimed that, without his contribution, the Industrial Revolution would have happened a lot later. For his breeding methods enabled sufficient food to be produced to feed the masses that migrated from the countryside to the towns. Robert's old home at Dishley is still in excellent shape.
